INDIANAPOLIS – Carmel escaped to win the team championship in the IHSAA boys’ track and field competition on Friday night. Brownsburg junior John Colquitt did not make it easy, almost scoring a historic triple victory.

The Greyhounds have scored 25 points in the last two events for a 68-40 margin over Brownsburg, who had been trailing three points so far.

Center Grove was third with 38 points, all in the sprints.

It was Carmel’s fourth boys track title in the last six state competitions and the sixth state championship this school year – one of his own Indiana High School Athletic Association record.

Carmel won two events, both involving Owen Schafer. He was first in the 400 meters in 48.36 seconds, and his 49.4 second lead in the 1,600 relay gave the Greyhounds a lead they never gave up.

Elsewhere, Columbus North junior Tucker Smith, who was looking to become the first 70-foot shot putter in Indiana history, broke the 24-year-old competition record five times with five more throws than 67 feet. His winning distance was 67 feet, 11 1/4 inches.

Jeremy Allen of Pike held a previous state competition record of 66-8 1/2.

Lawrence Central high jumper Kamyren Garrett, the US leader at 7-3, won with a 7-foot clearance on that third attempt. He chose to give it a try (and miss) and what would have been a 7-4 1/4 state record. Tyray Lackey of Brownsburg was second at 6-10.

Colquitt was looking to become the second athlete in 92 years to win three individual events. He was first in both hurdles and fourth in the long jump for 26 of Brownsburg’s 40 points.

He won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.53 in a headwind, then came back from behind to win the 300-meter hurdles in 37.81. He jumped 22-9 1/4 long, about six inches behind the first.

Whiteland eldest, Will Jefferson, claimed an unmistakable 3,200-meter victory, pulling away halfway through the race en route to a time of 8: 54.05. He raised his arms in celebration as he crossed the finish line. He was not far from the competition record of 8: 51.15 set by four-time North Central champion Futsum Zienasellassie in 2012.

Carmel’s Kole Mathison and Jacob Fisher finished second and third, beating state cross country champion Izaiah Steury of Angola in fourth.

There was a surprise in the 1600, won by Indiana University rookie Camden Marshall of Corydon Central in 4: 07.31. Columbus North junior Reese Kilberger-Stumpf was second in 4: 07.79 and Highland’s Lucas Guerra third in 4: 08.29.
