Detroit supplies most Class 8 engines in first half of 2021

Detroit, the engine brand of Daimler Trucks North America, supplied the most Class 8 engines in North America in the first half of this year, edging independent engine maker Cummins Inc. by 1,299 units or 1 point percentage.
A total of 121,215 engines were supplied in two categories, according to WardsAuto.com. Group 1 comprises 8,960 Class 8 engines of less than 10 liters while Group 2 covers 112,255 Class 8 engines of 10 liters and above.
For the six-month period, Detroit increased its lead in Group 2 engines, and Cummins saw its dominant lead in Group 1 decline slightly from the previous year, according to Ward’s.
Detroit supplied 41,925 leading Class 8 engines, of which 41,154 were in Group 2, for a 36.6% share, and 771 in Group 1.
Its share in the total engines supplied was 34.5%. Cummins held a combined 33.5% stake, supplying engines to all truck manufacturers.
Cummins landed 33,018 engines in Group 2, for a 29.4% share, and 7,608 in Group 1, where its share was 84.9%. In Group 1, Freightliner received the most Cummins engines, 4,663.

All Detroit engines went to DTNA’s Freightliner and Western Star brands. Separately, the Group 1 engines supplied by Mercedes-Benz fell to 45 from 78 during the period 2020.

Cummins chief executive officer Tom Linebarger acknowledged on the company’s latest earnings call that supply chain disruptions persist amid the new delta variant of the coronavirus, but he sees a difference from it to disruptive conditions in 2020.
“Even in markets where we are still seeing disruption, our supply base is performing better under the same appalling conditions while remaining stable,” Linebarger said. “Even a lousy team is better than changing all the time. Everyone is doing better and we are seeing an improvement. This is right where the new outbreak is, this is where we see the [higher] costs are incurred.
Paccar Inc., parent company of Kenworth Truck Co. and Peterbilt Motors Co., received 63.9% of Cummins Group 2 production – and the brands were the first and third largest users of Cummins Class 8 engines, respectively. larger, with a combined total of 21,113.
Paccar CEO Preston Feight said in his company’s latest earnings call that he did not expect to do less vertical integration in 2022, despite planned capital spending on new alternative powertrains and what the company said were advanced driver assistance and autonomous driving systems, connected vehicle services, and improved production and distribution facilities.
Paccar supplied a total of 15,437 of its own Class 8 engines, of which 14,901 were the largest engines and 536 Group 1. This gave it a 12.7% share of the total number of engines supplied.
Feight said Paccar’s approach with engines would be more in line with what it has offered customers in the past.
“So our R&D and our thinking is to integrate vertically where it makes sense, to partner with others where it makes sense,” he said. “We make investments where they make sense from a volume perspective. We continue to develop our Paccar engine business. Obviously, 60% of our powertrain sales are still our driving force in the world, and we continue to make the right investments to bring the best products to the customer. “
Mack Trucks, a unit of the Volvo Group, supplied 9,607 engines to its trucks – all of which were in Group 2. It also used 135 Cummins Group 1 engines and 139 Cummins in Group 2. Mack’s share of the total of the engines supplied was 7.9%.
Andrea Brown, director of powertrain product management at Mack Trucks, said more and more road fleets are specifying Mack Anthem models with Mack’s next-generation MP8HE 13-liter engine to improve fuel efficiency up to ‘at 3% compared to the previous generation MP8HE and more. by 6% compared to the non-HE version.

Volvo Trucks North America, also a brand of the Volvo Group, supplied 10,579 engines, all of Group 2, where it also used 698 Cummins engines. Its share in the total engines supplied was 8.7%.
International, a brand of Navistar Inc., supplied 2,996 Group 2 engines, or 2.4% of the total supplied. It also operated 2,258 Cummins Group 1 and 8,697 Cummins Group 2 engines – and was the second Cummins customer in both groups.
Other engine manufacturers were unable to provide comment.
