Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Luke Voit Gets Back On Track; Juan Yepez and Alek Thomas make their mark
i mentioned thisof Waiver Wirebut it would have been easy to pass over since it had not yet given fruit
The Padres didn’t activate IL’s Luke Voit on Tuesday because they were desperate. They did it because they were convinced it was fixed.
But wait, isn’t this the guy who was batting .143 (6 for 42) before being sidelined by a bicep strain? Wasn’t the one who performed so poorly on a Triple-A rehab mission, going 0-18 with 12 strikeouts, that the Padres had to save him?
Yes, but what did they do with him after that? According to MLB.comthey had him take 25 simulated at-bats — about six games — in front of the coaching staff on Monday to help kick some of the bad habits he developed while playing through the injury.
Apparently it worked, as he homered twice in his second game on Wednesday.
I may not need to remind you of Voit’s credentials given how strongly I promoted them during draft season, but for completion I will. He led the majors in home runs in 2020. He hit .271 with a .901 OPS in four seasons with the Yankees, homering at a better rate than Matt Olson during that streak. He was nothing short of a staple in his healthy days.
The Yankees, however, unplugged him, and apparently the Fantasy Baseballers did, too, as he’s only listed in 56% of the CBS Sports leagues. Given the dearth of offense, and especially power, in the league, you’ll want to do something about it.
