Millbrook wins boys ‘track title, Olympiques win girls’ championship in 4A
Greensboro, North Carolina – The 4A Women’s State Meet was fast, as three State Meet records fell through. In the team competition, the Olympic Women and Men from Millbrook won the Team Championships at the 2021 State 1A Track and Field Championships. The Olympic Trojans won their second all-time team title, their first since 2000, while Millbrook won the program’s first tag team championship.
Akala Garrett of Harding University was selected as the top performer, racing to victory in the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles. She cleared in 13.90 seconds in the 100 hurdles and 41.64 seconds in the 300 hurdles. Garrett also ran the second stop of the Rams’ 4×200-meter relay, combining with Sanai Forte, Naiobi White and Queen Burnett to win in 1: 40.91.
The women’s competition was brisk, with three state competition records in all categories going down the drain. Cardinal Gibbons’ Shawnti Jackson landed the 200-meter mark, cutting the board in 23.06 seconds. Jackson broke the previous record of 23.51 seconds set by Gabby Mayo of Southeast Raleigh in 2006. Jackson was the 100-meter champion in 11.48 and was part of the winning team in the 4×100-meter relay for the Crusaders.
Sanu Jallow of western Mecklenburg broke the 800-meter record when she crossed in 2: 07.78. Her performance topped the mark of 2: 08.51 set by Nevada Mareno in 2016. The 1,600-meter record was eclipsed by Maddie Huecker of Lake Norman when she finished in 4: 50.36. Her time was better than the mark of 4: 51.54 set by Samantha George of Millbrook in 2012.
The only women’s Olympic victory in the event came in the final event of the competition, the 4×400-meter relay. The Trojans crossed the finish line in 3: 48.86 with the side of T’Sheylah Moore, Terri Gaston, Zyra Shivers and Mia Gardner en route to victory. The same quartet combined to finish second in the 4X200-meter relay, falling behind Champions Harding University who posted 1: 40.91.
The Trojans also finished second in the 4x800m relay with Moore, Gaston, Gardner and Natalia Martin just over eight seconds behind the winners of the Reagan event who finished in 9: 12.53 . In the Dash 400, Gardner, Moore and Gaston finished third, fourth and fifth respectively, helping to cement the tag team title.
On the men’s side of the competition, Millbrook edged Mallard Creek 53-51. Wildcat athletes have won three event titles en route to the program’s first team title. The Wildcats won the 4×800-meter relay championship as Graham Aitken, Harrison Enyeart, Joshua Navarro and Matthew Rapp combined to cut the boards in 8: 05.86. Millbrook also got state championship performances from Dillon Leacock and Caleb Stephens. Leacock won the 300-meter hurdles in 36.53 seconds while Stephens jumped 48’08.75 “en route to the triple jump title. Leacock was selected as the top male performer by winning the 300 hurdles and finishing second in the 110 hurdles.
