In January 2020, the Georgia Institute of Technology hosted a stakeholder meeting to discuss electric transportation in the Southeast. Several of the participants, including the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy (SACE), began to think about how to accelerate momentum and institute meaningful change.
Participants formed an informal collaboration that includes various stakeholders across the value chain, including electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing, electric vehicle charging service providers, supply chain companies, electric utilities, fleet managers, academia, Clean Cities coalitions, government agencies and non-profit organizations. The aim is to accelerate the growth of regional electric transport by supporting evidence-based policies and actions in the southeastern states that advance the electric vehicle market and associated infrastructure in the region.
This broad coalition has now launched the South-East Regional Electric Transport Initiative (SETRI). SETRI was designed to address one of the region’s most pressing needs to realize the benefits of electric transport, namely greater coordination and collaboration among key stakeholders.
SETRI aims to address regional market challenges such as electric vehicle charging and infrastructure gaps, accessibility, availability and cost of electric vehicle models, policy guidance and consumer awareness while opening up untapped opportunities for economic development, job growth, enhanced energy security and opportunities to reduce environmental impacts.
Why the Southeast is poised to lead transportation electrification
The Southeast is not only emerging as a hub for investment in electric vehicle manufacturing and job creation, but it is also well positioned to accelerate the deployment of electric vehicles in a diverse set of applications. , including fleets. The report “Transportation fuel expenditure retained in the South-East: electric vehicles compared to internal combustion vehicles” published by SACE details how the transition to all-electric transportation from gasoline and diesel vehicles has the potential to be an economic windfall of up to $ 47 billion in the region.
Another report from SACE and Atlas Public Policy, “Electrification of transport in the South-East”, compiles several data points of the electric vehicle market over the region and highlights the enormous economic development potential of electrification of transport systems. For example, the region accounts for 18% of the nation’s population while capturing more than 28% of U.S. investment in electric vehicle manufacturing, and a significant share of direct and supply chain jobs in a range of markets from electric vehicles, including light vehicles, medium and heavy buses and trucks. More than a quarter of the $ 24 billion in investments made by automakers and battery makers are in the Southeast. As investment and employment continue to increase, new models of electric passenger vehicles are entering the market.
Southeast Electric Vehicle Market Indicators
However, the Southeast lags the country in electric vehicle sales and the deployment of charging stations, accounting for only 10% of national electric vehicle sales and 13% of deployed electric vehicle chargers. Utility and government funding for transportation electrification is significantly under-represented in the region: the South East accounts for around 1% of utility investment and 4% of nationwide public funding. The region is also at risk of being increasingly exposed to climate change and some of the highest levels of poverty and racial inequality in the country.
Given the region’s abundant, affordable, and increasingly cleaner electric power, and an expanding electric vehicle manufacturing supply chain, the Southeast occupies a unique position where electrification of transportation can be transformational for the region, including:
- Continued employment growth as manufacturing facilities are developed across the region,
- Improved energy security and resilience,
- Improvements in network efficiency and downward pressure on electricity tariffs,
- Reduced operational costs for fleet operators in the region,
- Improving air quality and reducing CO2 emissions, and
- New mobility options and reduced energy costs for low and moderate income populations.
SETRI Coalition’s support for the expansion of the electric vehicle market
More than 60 public and private organizations are the founding signatories of SETRI Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at accelerating the benefits of electric transport for the region. This coalition includes pricing companies, utilities, automakers, government officials, city planners, nonprofits, universities, and other research institutes. The coalition will leverage the expertise and resources to help state leaders navigate the transition to electric mobility. To accelerate the growth of the electrification of regional transport throughout the South-East, SETRI intends to:
- Promote the development of the regional EV market,
- Carry out education and awareness-raising activities among consumers and decision-makers,
- Coordinate state electrification efforts and university research, and
- Collaborate in the electrification efforts of transport outside the South-East.
The SETRI coalition welcomes the participation of additional organizations in the electrification transport ecosystem of the South East. Entities interested in signing the MoU can do so at any time, and coalition participation is not limited to signatories.
SACE is pleased to be one of the founding signatories of SETRI MOU and looks forward to collaborating with other stakeholders to advance policies that will electrify our transport systems throughout the South East.
