Parents of Del Sur and children outraged after the demolition of a bike path built in the neighborhood
DEL SUR, Calif .– Parents and children are outraged in Del Sur after their neighborhood-built BMX track was razed to the ground by the city on Wednesday.
Neighbors describe it as the region’s hotspot – a place the kids went to after school.
“I mean they would work together, all the kids after school were here,” neighbor Allison Leedom said. “They were playing, they were solving problems, they were kids.”
It all started during the pandemic when neighborhood children and families turned a wasteland into a neighborhood bike path. Leedom said her children ride the track almost every day with dozens of other children from the area.
“They loved it at a time and time when so many kids weren’t out there and sitting in front of a screen,” Leedom said. “And during COVID, they could only be outside. We encouraged him.
Mountain biker Manuel Altamirano said the environment “allowed them to familiarize themselves with their cycling skills before going there”.
However, it all came to an end on Wednesday when a bulldozer showed up and leveled it.
“I was devastated,” Leedom said. “My children are devastated, the neighborhood is devastated. The fact that this can happen is absolutely absurd.
The BMX track was so popular that the neighborhood association explained why it was demolished by emailing the neighbors.
He said the city has issued an infraction notice for the trail to be graded because the lot is “100% preserved and should not be disturbed.” The letter also states that in order to have an off-road motorcycle course, the land would have to be legally developed with a permit.
“If there is an activity offered, such as a dirt bike track. then the lot must first be legally developed with a permit, but I highly doubt the city would approve it, ”the letter said.
Altamirano added that he understands that there are certain ways of doing things, but says it is difficult because “children are children”.
“You have to let them be kids and enjoy, you know, being outside,” he said.
