Rally scheduled for Thursday for state to take action on public transportation and safety – Boston 25 News
BOSTON – A group is planning to gather at State House on Thursday morning to call on the state to take more action on public transportation and safety. Transit is Essential says the recent derailments and unsafe conditions on the stairs and escalators at T station are the result of long-term divestment.
The day after the red line derailment, people were back on board when service resumed.
Many cyclists once again found themselves wondering if they felt safe while riding.
“Yeah, I do, I do,” said one runner.
“The number of people who travel every day, it happens from time to time. It makes sense, ”said another runner.
The T recently saw its red and orange lines derail, the Green Line crash, one death in a staircase at T station and several people injured during an escalator malfunction.
At an inauguration in Framingham – we asked Governor Charlie Baker: what’s going on?
“The T is safe and every day thousands and thousands of people depend on it to get where they’re going and it works,” Baker said.
During the recent escalator and red line derailment, the T posted only social media updates and emailed details of what happened. Neither the director of MBTA nor the secretary of MassDot answered questions or held a briefing to ensure public safety.
We asked the governor if this was something he would have done differently from a management point of view.
“I’ll definitely talk to Steve Poftak and Jamie Tesler about this,” Baker said. “I think the first thing they want to do is do the investigation that will allow them to answer the questions you’re going to ask yourself and I think that’s where they should start.”
Baker also defended his administration’s commitment to T.
“Find me another administration that spent $ 5 billion modernizing and updating a system that was horribly neglected for decades before we took office. Is there still important work to be done? Absolutely, ”Baker said.
Baker also referred to the infrastructure bill that Washington is debating. He has made it clear that he hopes this will pass in some form or another as he says there is a lot of money that will make a big difference for the T here in our state.
