Soon there will be a new dog park and off-leash area, as well as a pedestrian walkway, in Seattle’s Georgetown neighborhood.

The connection will provide an acre of green space, including 80 new trees, and is part of the Georgetown to South Park Connection project, which aims to create a pedestrian and cycling connection between the two neighborhoods.
The space sits on 46,000 square feet of land known as the Georgetown Flume site. Seattle City Light received approval this week from the Seattle City Council Transportation and Utilities Committee to transfer the land to the Seattle Department of Transportation and Seattle Parks and Recreation.
“The move of the Georgetown Canal site from Seattle City Light to the Seattle Department of Transportation and Seattle Parks and Recreation is a perfect example of what we can accomplish when we work together. Through this interdepartmental collaboration, the city of Seattle will be able to provide much needed park space in South Seattle and a critical pedestrian connection between the South Park and Georgetown neighborhoods, ”Mayor Jenny Durkan said in a statement. writing. “As we looked at all of the underutilized properties, we knew that the transfer of the Georgetown Canal site from Seattle City Light to the Seattle Department of Transportation and Seattle Parks and Recreation would create a valuable public asset for generations to come. “
The Flume site is located between the Aero Motel and the Boeing campus. It was the historic site of the means of transportation that carried water from the Georgetown Steam Plant from City Light to the Duwamish River, until the plant ceased operations in 1975.
As part of the transfer of this property – the eastern portion of which goes to Parks and Recreation and the western portion to SDOT – Seattle City Light will benefit from a “street vacation” in the area. Street holidays, according to a city statement, “are a mechanism for private use of the right-of-way, based on the public interest.”
