Transport services prepare for icy roads, advise on winter driving
MONROE, La. (KNOE) – Roads will be affected by winter conditions in the ArkLaMiss. Freezing temperatures when it rains or snows can cause ice to form on the roads. If you must drive, be extra careful, especially on highways and bridges.
“Things can go wrong very quickly on an icy road or even on a rainy or windy day,” said Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development Communications Director Rodney Mallett.
With winter weather conditions expected, officials said things could get dangerous.
“If you experience a skid, take your foot off the throttle and steer into the skid and always lose low beam during rain or sleet,” said State Police Sgt. Scott Moreau. Louisiana.
Moreau said if you have to hit the road, be hyper aware, wear your seatbelt and don’t use cruise control.
“Reduce your speed and allow extra travel time to get to your destination if you have to travel. Increase your following distance behind vehicles,” Moreau said.
Mallett said the DOTD is closely monitoring the weather with salt on standby.
“We have to time it with rainfall and temperature, so we have staging areas all over the northeast Louisiana region and we have salt and salt to spread at those sites,” Mallett said.
Mallett said they would put up barriers in front of bridges or roads if needed.
“We will close roads and deem roads impassable, we’ve had issues in the past with people moving barricades, we don’t need people to do that,” Mallett said.
In southern Arkansas, they started putting salt on the roads two days ago, and now the Arkansas DOTD is worried about black ice because the conditions are only getting worse.
“We try to plow as much as possible, treat the roads with rock salt and repeat this process over and over and minimize the patches of ice that we have there,” said the public information officer of Arkansas DOTD, David Parker.
