Athletics | September 08, 2021
2020 Olympians Michael Norman (gold medalist), Anna cockrell and Isaiah Jewett, Hall of Fame Head Coach Ron Allice as well as former 2021 NCAA Championship athletes and team members will be on hand as the USC Track and Field Program officially opens the John Colich Track and Field Center with an opening ceremony on Friday September 10 at 10 a.m.
USC President Carol L Folt, Athletic Director Mike Bohn, benefactor John Colich, architect of the building Joe Antunovich, Trojan head coach and former Olympic gold medalist Quincy Watts, Jewett and current 800m runner Jemima russell all will be shod as part of the inauguration ceremony.
The John Colich Track and Field is the new home for the 2021 USC NCAA Women’s Champions and 26-time Men’s Champions Programs. The USC women’s program has won two of the last three NCAA outdoor titles, finishing runner-up the other season, while the men’s team has finished in the top-five in five of the past eight seasons. The 26 NCAA outdoor titles won by the USC men’s program are more than double that of any other NCAA Division I track and field program and the most of any USC sports team .
Cockrell reached the Olympic finals for the United States in the women’s 400m hurdles, after becoming the second woman to win the NCAA titles in the 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles at the championships to lead USC to the women’s tag team title in 2021. Norman won a gold medal on the United States 4x400m relay team, after placing fifth in the men’s 400m final. Jewett tripped in his 800m semi-final but received plenty of praise for his sportsmanship in helping the runner who tripped him over his feat and finishing the race together. Earlier this year, Jewett set the USC 800m record and won the 2021 NCAA Men’s 800m title, the first Trojan horse to win the event.
At the end of the ribbon-cutting ceremony, there will be a reception, followed by an opportunity for those in attendance to tour the John Colich Track and Field Center.
